I use this web quest during a unit on biotechnology, when students have an understanding of DNA and how it can be manipulated.  This web quest was designed to be used as an extension activity, not to introduce the topic of genetic engineering/biotechnology/gene therapy.  I think it is more worthwhile used towards the conclusion of a unit, as students will have more prior knowledge with which to consider the roles.

Some roles are linked to the same web sites.  This gives all groups/roles equal access to the same information, but from different perspectives.  Hopefully this reduces the time needed for collaboration to complete the final report.  The final report is expected to be typed.

I provide the students with a very skeletal outline to organize the report.  This gives them some creative license to present information in an order that they feel may be more effective to support their decision.
